Bwindi Community Hospital (BCH) is proud to celebrate, Mr. Kamara Daniel, who has been recognized as the “Outstanding Nutritionist of the Year 2025” at the prestigious Heroes in Health Awards (HIHA). The recognition was at the 6th edition of the HIHA held on Friday, November 14, 2025 during the Africa Health Summit at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Kampala.

Kamara has been at the forefront of BCH’s nutrition programs, working tirelessly to ensure that patients, especially children, mothers, and vulnerable families receive the care and guidance they need. At BCH, Kamara treats cases of severe malnutrition, participates in community outreach programs that teach families how to prepare balanced meals using locally available foods.

BCH serves as the primary referral hospital for malnutrition in Kanungu District. Poverty, limited access to diverse foods, and gaps in health education often leave children stunted or underweight, while mothers face complications during pregnancy due to poor nutrition.

Kamara continues to carry out initiatives such as nutrition rehabilitation, school health programs, and maternal nutrition counseling, which ensure that nutrition is not treated as an afterthought but as a cornerstone of healthcare. He is also a tutor at the Uganda Nursing School Bwindi and Uganda College of Health Sciences Bwindi.

The Heroes in Health Awards, organized annually to celebrate excellence in Uganda’s health sector, bring together professionals who have gone above and beyond to improve lives. Winning the Outstanding Nutritionist of the Year award shows the impact that Bwindi Hospital continues to have in Kanungu and beyond.

In the same 2025 HIHA awards, our Community Mental Health specialist, Mr. Kuule Yusuf was nominated for the Mental Health Champion of the year. Kamara’s award is an addition to the many HIHA awards that have been given to the Bwindi Community Hospital and staff. In 2024, BCH was recognized for the "Use of ICT and Innovations to Improve Patient Care," while Dr. Scott Kellermann, the founder of the hospital, won the prestigious "Lifetime Achievement Award." In 2022, Mr. Isaac Orikushaba, BCH Medical Microbiologist, was recognized as the Community Health Worker of the year for Western Uganda.
