244 Graduate as Uganda Nursing School Bwindi Commemorates 10th Anniversary

On Friday, November 17, 2023, Uganda Nursing School Bwindi celebrated 10 years of training top- notch health care workers in the Kigezi sub-region. The day also marked as the 3rd graduation, since the school started.

For this 3rd graduation, a total of 244 students were awarded with Diplomas and Certificates in Nurisng and Midwifery. Of these, 63.5% were females and 36.5% were males. 17.2% of the graduands received Diplomas while 82.8 received Certificates. 27.9% of the graduands were midwives, and 72.1% Nurses.

Mr. CharlesTumwesigye, the Deputy Director Field Operations at Uganda Wildlife Autrhority represented the Guest of Honor, Mr. Sam MwaNdha, the Executive Director, Uganda Wildlife Authority. The 10 years celebration and 3rd graduation was witnessed by partners, supporters, funders, partners and students of Uganda Nursing School Bwindi both on-site and on-line. Notably, the Kellermann Foundation, and Westport Rotary Club were among the partners who attended the events in Buhoma, Bwindi.

In his speech, the Principal of the Nursig School, Mr. Robert Kamugisha, appreciated the good works of Dr. Scott Kellermann, the Diocese of Kinkiizi, the Bwindi Community Hospital Board of Governors, the Foundation Body, the Kellermann Foundation, and the benefactors; Steve and James, and Jerry Hall who contributed enormously to the establishment of UNSB in 2013. He also congratulated and commended the students for their perseverance and hardwork in the face of significant challenges, such as Covid 19 pandemic.

“Your perseverance and hard work in the face of significant challenges has been exceptional, and we are proud of you. I am sure that you are ready to take on all the world has to offer.”

Mr. Charles Tumwesigye challenged the graduands to remember that they are essential workers and to know that their services are highly demanded. “Remember that you are essentail workers. You are being commissioned today to save lives. You need to translate your knowledge and skills to serve your country better. Your services in the medical profession are highly demanded,” he reminded them.

Mr. Tumwesigye also appreciated and pledged to support the Bwindi Community Hospital and the Nursing School vision of becoming a University. He also recognised the rights of the indigeneous people, the Batwa and thanked BCH for ensuring health and livelihood empowerment for the Batwa.

Uganda Nursing School Bwindi is a rural-based institution which was established by Bwindi Community Hospital, the only hospital existing in the Bwindi area as a way of responding to the critical shortage of health workers in the area.
